Leadership
As Assistant Vice Chancellor for Research for STEM-Health Sciences Collaborations, Rory Cooper, PhD, facilitates dialogue and cooperation between Pitt’s science, technology, engineering, and mathematics research and Pitt’s medicine, health, and rehabilitation research, acting as a bridge for sharing knowledge and resources between these two important domains.
Dr. Cooper is a world-renowned inventor and researcher in the field of bioengineering, working with biomechanics, robotics, rehabilitation engineering, and assistive device design to improve and advocate for greater mobility, health, and function of people with disabilities. He is founder, director, and CEO of the Human Engineering Research Laboratories, a research laboratory jointly funded by the University of Pittsburgh, the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, and UPMC. Dr. Cooper is FISA & Paralyzed Veterans of America Distinguished Professor in the School of Health and Rehabilitation Sciences, as well as holding professorships in Pitt’s Bioengineering, Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, and Orthopaedic Surgery Departments, Carnegie Mellon University’s Robotics Institute, and the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery in the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences. He is Past Chair of the Department of Rehabilitation Science and Technology and was previously Associate Dean for Inclusion and Diversity in Pitt’s School of Health and Rehabilitation Sciences.
Mission & Goals
The mission of the Chancellor’s Office of Research for STEM-Health Sciences Collaborations is to provide a framework by which researchers from School of Computing and Information, Dietrich School of Arts and Sciences, School of Dental Medicine Education, Swanson School of Engineering, School of Health and Rehabilitation Sciences, School of Medicine, School of Nursing, School of Pharmacy, and School of Public Health can share resources in order to collaborate effectively for the good of all.
